CAUSES OF HEARING LOSS
There are many possible causes of hearing loss. These can be divided into two basic types, called conductive and
sensorineural hearing loss.

Moontlike oorsake van hierdie tipe gehoorverlies sluit in ouderdoms-verwandte gehoorverlies, akoestiese trauma(veroorsaak deur harde geraas), sekere virale en bakteriële infeksies (bv. meningitis), blootstelling aan sekere medisyne middels (bv. sterk anti-biotika's), Ménière se siekte (wat tinnitus, balansprobleme en gehoorverlies veroorsaak), en sekere tumors.

Sensorineural hearing loss is due to damage to the pathway that sound impulses take from the hair cells of the inner ear to the auditory nerve and the brain.
Possible causes of this include age-related hearing loss, acoustic trauma (caused by loud noise), certain viral and bacterial infections (e.g. meningitis), exposure to
certain drugs (e.g. powerful anti-biotics), Ménière's disease (which causes dizziness, tinnitus, and hearing loss), and certain tumours.

Conductive hearing loss is caused by anything that interferes with the transmission of sound from the outer to the inner ear.
